What Should I Eat?

One of the first questions my clients ask me in our first session together is, “What should I eat?” My response is always, “FOOD.” Not the answer that you wanted?

As a health and wellness coach, I would love to think that I have diet and exercise all figured out and that I am the expert in the field. However, the hard truth is that I am only the expert when it comes to my own body and my own life experiences. You are the expert in your life. Honestly, you are the only one that has been there experiencing it every step of the way – give yourself some credit.

Each one of us has a unique body, unique biochemistry and unique stress level that we are handling. Evolution, family history, body type, and activity level all make you unique, hence you have unique needs. It is crucial that you become mindful of what unique combination of foods will work best for you. I can help you with that process.

When asking yourself about what you should eat, first take a step back. Was there a time in your life when you felt like the food you were eating made you feel strong and energized? If so, that’s a great place to start! As another example, if you had a diet plan in the past, did you feel great when you could eat anything as long as it was within your weightwatchers points or your calorie limit on My Fitness Pal? If so, we could start there. Or perhaps you went gluten free and felt like you needed less sleep because you felt so good, and we can start there.

After we talk about your past experience, we ask whether you can bring some of those successful elements back to your current diet.

If you don’t have very many positive food experiences to draw from, then we begin our own science project. Since you are only going to be successful at doing what you really want to do, we’ll discuss things that might work for you. Maybe you have always wanted to be vegan, or think it would be cool to commit to salad everyday for lunch. We can start with what sounds exciting and fun to you.

You will find success where you feel excited about your change. Start small, find success, listen to your body and the change will grow.
